Students eligible for these scholarships are Maine residents planning to attend an institution of higher education in the United States or Canada or out-of-state students planning to attend a Maine college or university. January 2008 scholarship recipients were all current college students from Bath, Chelsea, Guilford, and Rumford attending Pennsylvania State University, Unity College, and University of Maine.

MELA is dedicated to helping Maine students and their families finance their higher education. With the increasing cost of tuition and other related college expenses, MELA provides an alternative student loan program that can help families meet the gap between Federal financial aid limits and the total cost of higher education. The supplemental financial assistance available through MELA plays an important role in helping many Maine students access higher education.

"The online scholarship program is another way for MELA to give back to Maine students by helping them find financial resources for higher education," said Dr. Shirley Erickson, Executive Director of MELA. "In addition, The Maine Loan offers a low interest rate, generous borrower benefits, a rapid application process, and customer service based in Maine, making it the most competitive alternative education loan available in Maine."

Established by Maine legislation in 1988, MELA was created to assist Maine students and their families in achieving their higher education goals by providing an alternative student loan program. MELA's student loan programs exist to bridge the gap between the full cost of a higher education and traditional financial aid resources. This spring marks MELA's 20th year of providing low cost education loans, continuing its proud history of helping thousands of Maine residents pay for college.

Portland, ME (May 2006) -- The Maine Educational Loan Authority (MELA), sponsor of The Maine Loan® and The Maine Medical Loansm announces the introduction of the MELA Private Consolidation Loan.sm The MELA Private Consolidation Loan is designed to enable borrowers to consolidate qualified private or alternative loans at a lower interest rate than students or graduates are either already paying or can obtain by consolidating with other lenders, thereby lowering the costs of borrowing.

MELA's consolidation loan may be a useful debt management strategy for consideration by graduating college seniors. Educating students about the various financing options available to them is MELA's first priority, with Maine based Private Loan Specialists also trained to advise students if they believe consolidation is not in their best interest. With the MELA Private Consolidation Loan, borrowers will enjoy the benefits of a low, variable interest rate, a lower monthly payment due to extended repayment terms, and the convenience of making a single monthly payment to one lender. Eligible borrowers include Maine residents, existing MELA borrowers, and those having attended an approved Maine college or university. Borrowers with qualifying alternative loans are encouraged to find out whether or not the MELA Private Consolidation Loan is right for them.

"In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the utilization of alternative education loans by Maine students and family members," said Dr. Shirley Erickson, Executive Director of MELA. Portland, ME (May 30, 2003) -- Another significant drop in student loan interest rates this year will make paying for college a little easier for Maine families. The Maine Educational Loan Authority (MELA) offers two alternative student loans: The Maine Loan® with a new variable interest rate of 3.99% and The Maine Medical Loansm with a new interest rate of 3.12% while the student is in school. With the lowest rates offered by MELA in over 14 years, The Maine Loan and The Maine Medical Loan borrowers could save several thousand dollars over the life of their loans, making Maine’s lowest cost alternative education loans even more attractive to students and their families.

The Maine Loan, available to Maine students and out-of state-students attending Maine colleges and universities, is one of the lowest cost alternative education loans available. MELA’s interest rates are fixed annually so they cannot be increased by sudden changes in the prime rate. Last year, MELA expanded the scope of its medical loan program to include other degrees in addition to the Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine such as dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, podiatry, and chiropractic. This initiative provides MELA with the opportunity to assist additional Maine residents pursuing a wide-range of medical degrees.
